It is over fifty years since the assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The Hertz Rent-a-Car clock above the Texas School Depository Building has gone. It showed 12.30pm. when shots rang out across Dealey Plaza. A half century has passed since that fateful day in Dallas, with none of us any the wiser as to the identity of the real culprits, when a manuscript arrives in the mail, at the offices of a Miami attorney, which purports to explain all. As the attorney, Peter Marcus, hesitantly turns the pages, he quickly realises that he has stumbled upon a narrative which establishes the raison d'etre for the crime of the century. Written dispassionately by one of the assassins, as if he were seeking expiation for his sins, a story unfolds which lays bare a conspiracy of such complexity and magnitude, that it becomes hard to accept that ultimately only one man possessed the power and the means to orchestrate a coup d'etat of the U.S. government.
From the streets of Chicago to the battlefields of Vietnam, where our assassin had honed his skills, a picture gradually emerges of the many characters involved in the plot to kill the President and the subsequent cover up, which until now has led us to conclude that a lone gunman, Oswald, was responsible. That this man was the wrong man, there is now no doubt. He was only ever a dazed puppet, an innocent patsy. As the story unfolds, the identity of the puppeteer, the mastermind behind this vast, far reaching conspiracy becomes apparent. It is the man who liked to be called the Chief.
Along the way, as the curtain is drawn back, a cast of players who would normally only operate in the shadows is revealed. Ferguson, a CIA intelligence officer and case handler for the conspiracy uses his Machiavellian skills to secure his dark objectives, while Maynard, a past master of covert missions for the U.S., who Kennedy himself had once light-heartedly referred to as America's James Bond, meticulously oversees the housekeeping and tidying up after the event.
And then mysteriously, one by one, all the participants and witnesses, all the players and stakeholders, the winners and the also-rans begin to disappear from the squares on the board, which they had thought would hold them steady, safe and secure. All except the central character of the story, who by now is half way through a life sentence for another murder and whose only hope, is that prison will keep him out of the reach of the Chief and his cohorts. As indemnity against his own downfall, he writes a memoir of events and sends it to an old mobster friend, with instructions to send the manuscript onto attorneys in the event that he his tracked down and killed.
So, Peter Marcus becomes involved in a breathtaking race against time to bring this sensational story to the world's attention, before he too falls prey to the vast reach and influence of the men behind the scenes, the power brokers who still control the U.S. government, who have inherited the Chief's legacy and benefited handsomely from it, and who must at all costs, keep this story secret and forever hidden from view.
This is a must read for anyone still gripped by this tragedy. As Oscar Wilde said, "The truth is rarely pure and never simple."
