The battered body of a young woman is discovered in the graveyard of St Clements Church in Aberdeen's Harbour area. The initial police investigation assumes she is working girl as the area is well known for prostitution. The police reach out to the local prostitutes who reluctantly agree to help find the killer of the young girl. Fortunately one of the Aberdeen Detectives catches the press conference and notes similarities in the victimology. A few days later and the Aberdeen and Newcastle team compare notes and agree that they are looking for one killer and again try to link the victims.
A link eventually opens up in Manchester where the murder happened twenty years ago, the victim is another of two girls who end up in the care system and become separated. The murderer in this case is the father of the two girls who is sentenced to life in prison. The case begins to focus on Manchester where a fourth recent victim is found.
